ALL TIERS
High Availability
Per-AZ ASG with warm pool for sub-10s recovery. EIP failover eliminates DNS propagation delays. A single appliance or fixed HA pair is one point of failure; the fleet keeps serving through an instance loss as new and reconnecting flows shift to healthy instances.
Horizontal Scaling
Add or remove instances across AZs with spot + on-demand mixed instances. A single OPNsense/pfSense/NAT VM caps at one box's NIC and cores; horizontal scale-out is the only way past that ceiling. Planned scale-in is seamless: GWLB connection draining lets active flows finish before an instance is removed.
Vertical Scaling
Auto resize instance types up or down on CPU, memory, and packet drops -- a fixed appliance can't change size without downtime. Planned resizes are seamless: GWLB connection draining lets active flows finish before the old instance is retired, so you right-size to the load instead of overprovisioning for peak.
SOFTWARE FEE
units per hour = tier units × min(vCPU, 128) · charge per hour = units × unit price
Billed hourly, per vCPU Counted vCPU capped at 128 No minimum, no monthly commitment No per-GB data processing fee Independent of the EC2 instance price — same vCPU count, same fee

ZERO Data Processing Fees

AWS charges $0.045/GB for NAT, $0.065/GB for firewall, $0.006/LCU-hr for NLB, and $0.02/GB for Transit Gateway. Cloud Spectra charges zero data processing fees -- just one metered software unit, billed hourly on the instance's vCPU count (about $2 to $16 per vCPU per month depending on tier). The software fee never depends on what the EC2 instance costs, so two shapes with the same vCPU count pay the same. Elastic right-sizing plus spot is what makes running it yourself cheaper than both an always-on fixed appliance and the managed cloud meter -- you pay for the capacity you actually use, scale down off-peak, and ride spot. of AWS networking cost eliminated
Cloud Spectra fee = tier units × min(vCPU, 128) × the per-unit hourly price
c8in recommended — full IGW baseline bandwidth
Spot discount: 75% on EC2 only — the software fee is per vCPU, so it does not move
All pricing, throughput, and savings estimates are approximate and subject to change without notice. Actual performance varies by workload, ruleset complexity, packet size distribution, and AWS region. EC2 instance pricing reflects US East (N. Virginia) on-demand rates as of May 2026. The Cloud Spectra software fee is metered hourly through AWS Marketplace and appears on your AWS bill; monthly figures on this page are the hourly rate times 730 nominal hours, so a 31-day month meters 744.
