Twenty-five years in data networking led to one realization: cloud vendors charge for every byte, and nobody should pay that tax. Building Cloud Spectra -- an AI-powered gateway that replaces NAT, Firewall, Load Balancer, and Transit Gateway at zero per-GB cost -- is the most consequential work of my career. The control plane and data plane have never mattered more.
I founded Cloud Spectra in June 2026 to solve a problem I kept seeing teams struggle with: cloud networking costs that spiraled out of control as traffic grew. AWS charges for every gigabyte that passes through a NAT Gateway, Network Firewall, or Transit Gateway -- and those meters never stop running.
My goal is to give engineering teams a single intelligent appliance that replaces all of those managed services at a flat monthly fee -- with zero per-GB data processing charges. Whether a startup running a handful of microservices or an enterprise spanning 100+ AWS accounts, the cost model should be predictable and the tooling should be easy to work with.
I have worked on data networking software development for more than 25 years, in several startups as well as established enterprises. My work spans the full stack -- from kernel-level packet processing and control-plane protocol design to distributed systems and cloud infrastructure automation.
Why Cloud Spectra
Cloud infrastructure teams spend an enormous amount of engineering time and budget on AWS managed networking services that charge by the gigabyte. A busy production environment can easily accumulate $10,000--$15,000 per month just in NAT Gateway, Network Firewall, and Transit Gateway fees -- before a single line of application code is written.
Cloud Spectra AI Gateway runs as an elastic fleet of EC2 appliances inside your VPC that replaces all of those services. It handles source NAT, port forwarding, L4 load balancing, Suricata IDS/IPS, HTTP proxying, TLS termination, VPC peering mesh management, and a built-in LLM proxy with response caching -- all at a flat monthly software fee, with zero data processing charges.
The fleet scales on both axes automatically: horizontally out and in -- adding or removing instances across availability zones via per-AZ Auto Scaling Groups, with warm pools for fast scale-out -- and vertically up and down by resizing instance types. Planned scaling is seamless: GWLB connection draining lets active flows finish before an instance is removed. A single native appliance -- one OPNsense/pfSense/NAT VM, or a fixed HA pair -- cannot do this. It caps at one box's NIC and cores; horizontal scale-out is the only way past that ceiling. It also cannot resize without downtime, and is a single point of failure.
The result is typically a 70%-80% reduction in networking costs for teams with meaningful traffic volumes. Elastic right-sizing plus spot is what makes running it yourself cheaper than both an always-on fixed appliance and the managed cloud meter -- you pay for the capacity you actually use, scale down off-peak, and ride spot, right-sizing the fleet to the load instead of overprovisioning for peak.
